The public school district will regain control of the school, once the debt is completely forgiven.

How to calculate savings!

  1. Determine the official Taxable value of your property. Need to look up that value? If you have your last property tax statement, it will be listed there. If you need to look it up, go to the Muskegon County property Information Viewer. Once on that page, agree to the terms and conditions. Now type in your address or last name into the search bar in the upper left of the map. Alternatively use the map to navigate to your property. Once selected, a pop out screen will appear on the left. Under the Class and Value Information section, you should see taxable value – thats the number you will need.
  2. The new law will reduce your property taxes by 13 mills. What does that mean? A mill is 1/1000 of a dollar. In Michigan, property taxes are calculated by multiplying the number of mills levied by the taxable value.
  3. Do the calculation to find your savings. Now take your taxable value and multiple that by the reduction (13*.001 = .013). So in other words for every $1,000 dollars of your property’s taxable value, you will save 13 dollars. For example, If your property has a taxable value of $10,000 dollars, you’d save $130.00 a year on your taxes!
